As a Black woman with afro-textured hair, I grew up hearing phrases like, “The higher the hair, the closer to God.” This 60s-era idiom gained popularity alongside mid-century hair trends like the beehive as well as the Black is Beautiful movement that celebrated big, high hair. Half a century later, I came of age during the natural hair revival, with many Black women abandoning chemical straighteners to rediscover their natural hair. Gone were the narratives about “taming” unruly hair types. Instead, hair trends are now catered to getting that coveted big hair back.

All this to say, I’ve tried literally everything to grow strong, thick, and yes—big hair. From rice water to rosemary water, trends that are now blowing up on TikTok were popular on Black hair care blogs for years. I’ve become convinced that when it comes to trends, Black beauty bloggers can predict the future. Which is why I’ve long been using oils like castor oil, tanamu oil, and grapeseed oil for hair that I love.

Grapeseed Oil for Hair: What to Know

Hair oils are not a new solution. But there’s a more strategic way to use them than slathering on whatever well-packaged hair serum catches your eye. And no, I’m not talking about oil training. Though oil training works for some hair types, turns out it’s not about how much oil you use—it’s the kind of oil that counts. Different oils have different benefits, and just as with skincare, what works for someone else might not work for you.

However, grapeseed oil—aka Vitis Vinifera seed oil—is getting a lot of buzz because of its universality. Made from the seeds of grapes, this oil is more versatile than most. You can use it for cooking, for skin care, and also for hair. Its lightweight texture and rich ingredients are making it a popular oil to add to your haircare routine.

But what are the benefits of grapeseed oil? And is it worth the hype? I spoke to Jake Woods, dermatologist and co-founder of GyaLabs, about why exactly using grapeseed oil is such a popular application. And to be sure about its benefits, I tried the internet’s favorite grapeseed oil: the Olaplex No.7 Bonding Hair Oil.

What I learned? Grapeseed oil is a bonafide solution for split ends, damage, and parched strands. If you’ve been neglecting your hair care, grapeseed oil can provide near-instant, visible relief. Especially when combined with other rich oils, grapeseed oil can drastically improve your hair health in just one application. (No oil training necessary.) Read on for everything you need to know about using grapeseed oil for hair.

Grapeseed Oil at a Glance

According to Dr. Woods, there are many benefits to using grapeseed oil due to its antioxidant and fatty acid-rich ingredients. He notes that “grapeseed oil contains various active ingredients that contribute to its beneficial properties.” Here’s a further breakdown.

  • Essential Fatty Acids. Grapeseed oil is rich in essential fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid (omega-6 fatty acid) and oleic acid (omega-9 fatty acid). These fatty acids are important for maintaining the health and integrity of the skin and hair.
  • Vitamin E. Grapeseed oil contains tocopherols, a form of vitamin E. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. It helps hydrate and nourish skin and hair.
  • Proanthocyanidins. Grapeseed oil is a good source of proanthocyanidins, potent antioxidants. Proanthocyanidins help protect the skin and hair from environmental damage, including UV radiation and pollution. They also have anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe and calm the skin.
  • Polyphenols. Grapeseed oil contains various polyphenols, including flavonoids and phenolic acids. These compounds have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, contributing to the overall health and well-being of the skin and hair.
  • Resveratrol. Grapeseed oil may contain small amounts of resveratrol, a polyphenol known for its antioxidant and anti-aging properties. Resveratrol has been studied for its potential benefits in promoting healthy skin and reducing signs of aging.

The Benefits of Using Grapeseed Oil for Hair

Curious if grapeseed oil can really transform dry and damaged hair? The benefits speak for themselves.

  • Moisturizes the scalp. Grapeseed oil is lightweight and easily absorbed by the scalp, making it an effective natural moisturizer. It helps hydrate the scalp, preventing dryness and flakiness which can contribute to dandruff.
  • Nourishes and conditions hair. Grapeseed oil contains essential fatty acids, such as linoleic acid, which can help nourish and condition the hair. It moisturizes the hair strands, making them softer, smoother, and more manageable. Regular use of grapeseed oil can help improve the overall appearance and texture of the hair.
  • Strengthens and promotes hair growth. The antioxidants help to strengthen the hair follicles and promote healthy hair growth. By providing essential nutrients to the hair roots, it can potentially enhance hair thickness and reduce hair breakage.
  • Adds shine and luster. Grapeseed oil has a light texture that doesn’t weigh down the hair. It acts as a natural conditioner, adding shine and luster to the hair strands without leaving a greasy residue. It can help revive dull and lifeless hair, leaving it looking healthy and vibrant.
  • Protect against heat and environmental damage. Grapeseed oil has a high smoke point, which means it can withstand heat without breaking down and causing damage to the hair. It forms a protective barrier on the hair strands, shielding them from the harmful effects of heat-styling tools and environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays.

What other ingredients work well with grapeseed oil?

Grapeseed oil can be combined with various other ingredients to enhance its benefits and create customized haircare formulations. Some ingredients that work well with grapeseed oil include:

  • Essential Oils. Adding essential oils to grapeseed oils can provide therapeutic benefits. Lavender essential oil can soothe and calm the skin, tea tree oil has antibacterial properties, and rosemary oil can stimulate hair growth.
  • Carrier oils. Mixing different carrier oils with grapeseed oil can create a blend with a broader range of benefits. Jojoba oil is known for its moisturizing properties, coconut oil is deeply nourishing, and argan oil is rich in antioxidants.
  • Aloe Vera Gel. Combining grapeseed oil with aloe vera gel can create a soothing and hydrating blend. Aloe vera has moisturizing, calming, and healing properties, making it suitable for sensitive or irritated skin. This combination can be used as a moisturizer or soothing treatment for sunburns.
  • Vitamin E Oil. Grapeseed oil already contains some vitamin E, but adding additional vitamin E oil can boost its antioxidant properties. It can help protect the skin from free radical damage, promote healing, and improve overall skin health.
  • Hyaluronic Acid. Mixing grapeseed oil with hyaluronic acid can provide excellent hydration benefits. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts and retains moisture, helping to plump and moisturize the skin. This combination can be beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin.
  • Herbal Extracts. Incorporating herbal extracts like chamomile, green tea, or calendula into grapeseed oil can offer additional soothing, anti-inflammatory, or antioxidant properties.

Best Overall: Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil

Everything by Olaplex is so hyped up, I wasn’t sure if it could live up to the fanfare. Claiming to repair damaged strands, increase shine, and promote softness, I was expecting a lot. And spoiler: this hair oil delivered. The first thing I noticed was its super light texture. Other oils such as castor oil and tamanu oil are heavy and thick, making them difficult to apply without weighing down your hair. The almost-liquid texture of this oil surprised and delighted me. Another difference between this and other oils is its lack of scent. I hate overly-scented products on my hair, and this no-frills oil did the job without leaving a lingering smell behind.

As for results, as they say, consistency is key. I used this oil every day for a week and noticed a considerable softness and shine. My hair definitely looked healthier and my curl pattern loved it. But as for long-term damage repair, I’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, I can say I’m satisfied with the results so far and will keep using this oil to see if I can get even more benefits from it. Stay tuned!

My freshman-year dorm mate, a Paris Hilton lookalike who hailed from a wealthy Northern California suburb, was very clued into the fish oil craze of the early 2000s. Each day, she choked down one of those amber, egg-shaped pills to fortify her French manicure and color-treated tresses. It was, as far as I can remember, my first introduction to the idea of beauty supplements. Fish oil has fallen out of favor since then, clearing the way for biotin to take over as today’s beauty buzzword of note, but I remain as skeptical of the latter as I was of the former back in 2008. Of course, now that my own color-treated hair has started to thin out in my 30s, I find myself—against my better judgment—hunting for the best biotin supplements while wandering the grocery aisles.

So I decided to find out once and for all: does biotin really work at strengthening hair and nails? And what are the tried-and-true brands that actually live up to the hype?

The Experts

For guidance, I tapped two of my favorite experts, celebrity chef and nutritionist Serena Poon, and Camille Styles resident nutrition consultant and double-certified integrative nutrition health coach, Edie Horstman. Keep reading for answers.

Does biotin really improve hair and nails?

Biotin is a B vitamin that most people derive from a well-rounded diet (particularly when foods like fish, eggs, sweet potatoes, and almonds are incorporated). If you aren’t getting enough biotin, this may lead to brittle nails and hair loss.

“A handful of small studies has shown how biotin supplementation helped strengthen already brittle nails,” shared Poon. “Unfortunately, there is no evidence that supplementation with biotin will help already healthy hair and nails grow or strengthen. ”

Is it okay to take biotin every day?

This question earned a resounding yes from our experts, though both noted that a well-rounded diet should have a sufficient amount of biotin for an adult.

“Biotin is safe to take—even at high doses,” says Horstman. “That being said, taking too much can sometimes cause side effects like stomach aches and sleep issues, but these are pretty rare.”

How much biotin do I really need each day?

The daily recommended intake of biotin for all adults is 30 micrograms.

“To give you an idea of how much food you need to consume to reach your daily value, one egg contains 10 micrograms of biotin, one-fourth cup of sunflower seeds contains 2.6 micrograms of biotin, and half a cup of sweet potato contains 2.4 micrograms of biotin,” Poon explains. “It is unlikely that you need to take a biotin supplement, but you can always check with your healthcare provider if you are unsure.”

So much starts to change when you hit your 40s. But one thing I wasn’t prepared for? My hair texture. I have always had a slight wave to my hair, but over the last two years it’s become more coarse and frizzy. Now, let me preface this by saying I’m not certainly opposed to texture, curls, and even a little frizz. After all, that’s what gives our hair volume, definition, and character! No, it was the wiry, rough feeling of my hair that I was struggling with. It also felt really dry despite trying every hydrating hair mask along with upping my hair vitamins and omega-3 intake. In the summer, I also air dry my hair more and noticed it was much frizzier than usual, making it harder to style. More often than not, my hair would end up in a slicked-back ponytail or low bun. So, I did some research and found a hair smoothing treatment that would help reduce and smooth out the frizz and texture. Bonus: without sacrificing my hair’s own wave and movement.

Meet the Expert: Tania Whittier

It’s important to note here that I didn’t want dead-straight hair, just an overall softening and smoothing. I’ve heard from friends and colleagues how damaging other hair straightening treatments can be so I was looking for a non-toxic keratin treatment that could give me similar results. According to research and various studies, formaldehyde can increase the risk of cancer. Unfortunately, this is a key ingredient in most of the popular hair smoothing treatments. Finding a formaldehyde free treatment was critical.

That’s when I met Tania Whittier. With a roster of celebrity clients, it’s safe to say that the acclaimed stylist has seen it all. But it wasn’t until a client asked her about a non-toxic hair smoothing treatment that she decided to seriously look into it. And she hasn’t looked back.

I’ve had several natural hair smoothing treatments with Whittier now and I’m obsessed. While safety is always the top priority, efficacy is important, too. Well, let me tell you, this one works! Read on to learn more about this natural keratin treatment, how it works, how long it lasts, who the ideal candidate is, and more.

After two decades as a top colorist, Whittier has a packed calendar of celebrity clients from Maya Rudolph to Leslie Mann to Kristen Bell. Whittier is a renowned expert in the clean hair space and has spearheaded the non-toxic movement. Whittier hopes to spread awareness and inspire clients and hairdressers alike to make the switch to formaldehyde-free hair treatments.

Hair Smoothing Treatment: The Before and After

As you can see in my before photo, my hair was curly with quite a lot of frizz. And while you can’t tell from the photo, it was also coarse to touch. But after Whittier’s treatment, it’s smooth, glossy, and hydrated. Keep reading to learn why.

Toxic Vs. Non-Toxic Hair Treatments

The main difference between non-toxic hair smoothing treatments and traditional keratin ones is formaldehyde. The second biggest difference is the customization. This means that you can choose the level of straightness you want to achieve. (Keep the wave, lose the frizz.) Unlike traditional treatments, non-toxic options allow you to choose how much movement you want to keep in your hair while reducing the frizz.

I opted to be a little straighter than my usual hair this time because I wanted a sleeker look. But my friend and former colleague, Victoria Hoff who has thick, long, naturally wavy 2B S-curls, was able to reduce the frizz without compromising texture. Whittier always assesses the natural texture of the hair first to see what it does naturally and how she can play to that. Then it’s up to the formulas, processing, and irons to create a personalized result.

There are several non-toxic hair smoothing products available now. Whittier rotates between Puraluxe, Cezanne, and Leaf & Flower depending on the client’s hair. (She used Puraluxe on my hair.) One of the huge benefits is that you don’t have to wait to wash your hair. “Because the treatment has gone into the cortex and is actually sealed in, you can resume your normal life immediately post-treatment, which is a huge bonus,” explains Whittier. Yes, that means you can do a workout or class at the gym straight after, too.

How does it work?

Formaldehyde treatments work by pushing the keratin into the cuticle with heat and the formaldehyde acts as its finishing product. Whittier notes that this gives the illusion of shine, but over time, the hair becomes dry because it’s too harsh on the hair, especially fragile hair.

Non-toxic treatments open the cuticle to allow the amino acids to enter the cortex of the hair versus the old way of high heat mixed with formaldehyde that created a toxic carcinogen. “It works better because now I’m able to control processing times and heat levels along with mixing different formulas,” she adds. “This allows me to customize a treatment for every client because not everyone wants stick-straight hair.”

Benefits of Non-Toxic Hair Smoothing Treatments

  • Formaldehyde-free
  • Non-drying
  • Customizable depending on desired results
  • Can wash hair immediately post-treatment
  • Natural ingredients

The Step-by-Step Process From Start to Finish

Step 1: Shampoo to clean the hair but don’t use conditioner. Look at the texture of the hair and discuss desired results.

Step 2: Mix, apply product, and allow it to process. This allows the amino acids to enter the hair.

Step 3: Rinse out the hair 110% because the water will neutralize all the ingredients and any amino acids that didn’t make it into the cortex of the hair. This is an important step in creating a non-toxic treatment.

Step 4: Blow dry the hair.

Step 5: Flatiron the hair. This is also an important step because the hair will tell you what it can and can’t handle with the heat. It’s always important to know the hair and tools you’re using. A different temperature and type of iron can make a HUGE difference!

Note: Treatments can take anywhere from 1-3 hours depending on what type of treatment you want and how long you need it. Your hair length and texture also come into play. Depending on the treatment, Whittier charges $125- $475.

How long does hair smoothing treatment last?

Treatments can last anywhere from a few weeks to up to six months. “Everyone has different texture and everyone wants different results so it varies,” Whittier explains. “But the more contrasting the texture is from your natural, the faster it will feel like it’s growing out.”

Who is the ideal candidate for a non-toxic keratin treatment?

Whittier says just about everyone can benefit from an amino acid smoothing treatment. “Even shampoos are starting to boast about keratin and amino acids because they help to repair the hair,” she says. “It’s all about balance though, so definitely talk to your stylist to make sure your hair stays in the sweet spot!”

Post-Treatment Results

Week 1

This is my hair washed and air-dried one week post non-toxic keratin treatment. As you can see, it’s still very glossy and smooth. The curl at the front is from me tucking it behind my ears while it’s wet—I like the s-bend shape it creates around my face.

Week 6

This is my hair air-dried and washed six weeks post natural hair smoothing treatment. While some texture has returned, it’s still smooth and it feels incredibly soft. There is a wave to it that gives my hair shape and movement but it’s not frizzy. I love it so much.

Tania’s Top 4 Brands for Post-Treatment Care

Whittier always recommends sulfate-free professional shampoo that doesn’t have keratin or proteins in it. “A smoothing treatment puts all the amino acids in so you don’t want to try adding more; this will cause your hair to feel dry—it’s all about the balance,” she advises.

Often overlooked, hair health is one of the primary ways our bodies signal that something could be off. Before hopping back to your inbox or scrolling down to the best hair growth vitamins, take a second to think about your locks. Does your hair feel nourished or dull? How would you describe the state of your scalp? What about your hairline? Is your scalp dry? Hair thinning? As you answer these questions, keep in mind that everything from genetics and hormonal imbalances (hello, postpartum!) to stress and nutritional deficiencies can compromise your hair.

It’s also important to remember that we shed an average of 80-100 hairs every day. Additionally, during certain times of the year, we may notice an increase in shedding, especially in the coming fall months. This common phenomenon is known as seasonal shedding. At any rate, changes in your hair could indicate nutrition or lifestyle issues. A dry scalp, for example, could mean you aren’t getting enough healthy fats in your diet. Similarly, thinning hair could be caused by stress or a lack of protein on your plate.

What causes hair loss?

Without a doubt, you probably think about your hair on a daily basis. You’re either fretting over a bad hair day, in the midst of growing longer, stronger hair, or are considering an end-of-summer chop. Maybe, you’re stressing over recent hair loss. If that’s the case, you might be missing clues that your hair is revealing about your health. After all, research shows that changes in your hair’s look, texture, thickness, etc. can be signs of underlying health conditions. Before jumping to any conclusions, chat with your doctor about any changes you’ve noticed.

In terms of what causes hair loss, along with other hair conditions, it varies. For example, hair thinning could be tied to a thyroid disease. In essence, hypothyroidism can cause hair shedding, as well as a change in hair appearance. Anemia, another health condition, can be a sign of low iron stores, thus impacting hair health. And while it’s not completely understood why low iron causes hair loss, iron is critical for many biological reactions. From a nutrition standpoint, diet matters. Certain foods—like avocados, eggs, lentils, salmon, and seaweed—can support your hair’s luminosity, strength, and thickness.

Postpartum Hair Loss

Common for many mothers, the postpartum time period is often correlated with hair loss. During pregnancy, the body experiences soaring estrogen and progesterone, which causes hair to remain in an ongoing stage of growth. As hormones level out in the months following childbirth, changes in hair thickness can occur.

Rest assured that postpartum hair loss is both normal and temporary. It’s actually a change that is unrelated to breastfeeding. Most women will return to their usual hair growth cycle between 6-12 months after giving birth. If you’re a new mom and are noticing dramatic hair loss, that’s also common. If you have any concerns, discuss them with your doctor. Otherwise, continue to eat nutrient-dense foods, incorporate self-care when possible, and continue taking your prenatal vitamin.

Hair Wellness Begins on the Inside

If take one thing from this article, make it this: hair wellness starts internally. Yes, products can transform your hair, revitalize your locks, and re-introduce a healthy scalp, but nothing compares to a diet rich in key vitamins and nutrients. Unfortunately, the Standard American Diet (SAD) lacks essential nutrients—but armed with an understanding that eating whole, minimally processed foods is ideal, you’re on your way to establishing healthy locks. And while eating foods that promote hair growth is important, adding a daily supplement will further support your hair growth goals.

Important Ingredients in Hair Growth Supplements

The right hair growth vitamins can help nourish your hair from the inside out, resulting in a faster growth rate and thicker, more nourished strands. An effective supplement can improve the length and condition of your hair, and as an added bonus, it can also improve your nails and skin.

When it comes to choosing the best hair growth supplement, you want to look for these key ingredients:

Vitamin A

A fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin A is in the same class as retinoids—a common ingredient in many beauty creams. Vitamin A is necessary for cell growth, and because hair has some of the most quickly replicating cells in the body, hair needs adequate levels of vitamin A.

B Vitamins

Vitamins B6, B7, and B12 are especially important for hair health. Biotin is a common B vitamin and probably one of the most popular supplements for healthy hair. In fact, not getting enough B vitamins can cause hair loss. Vitamin B12 deficiency has also been linked to hair loss and may be involved in the premature greying of hair.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against free radicals, and free radical damage can block hair growth. Additionally, our bodies need vitamin C to create collagen (a protein). Collagen is an important part of hair structure.

Vitamin E

Like vitamin C, vitamin E is a potent antioxidant. Vitamin E helps block free radicals at the hair follicle level, potentially helping maintain healthy locks in the long run.

Iron

Given that adequate iron levels are necessary for hemoglobin production, and hemoglobin is required to deliver oxygen to your hair follicle cells, iron is crucial for hair health.

Zinc

Research shows that zinc is a potential inhibitor of hair follicle regression, meaning that it plays a role in hair health. Zinc is involved in protein synthesis and cell division, two components of hair growth.

Protein

Last but not least, because hair is made almost entirely of protein, it’s an important ingredient in your daily supplement and/or diet.

All About Biotin

First of all—what is it? Biotin is one of the B complex vitamins. It helps convert food into energy. Like other B vitamins, biotin is water-soluble, so any extra biotin you consume will simply pass through your body when you urinate. Between 30-100 mcg per day of biotin is recommended. Most people get the daily recommended amount of biotin from eating a healthy diet (it’s present in eggs, milk, bananas, etc.), but adding a biotin supplement has no known toxicity symptoms associated with supplementing too much.

While the National Institutes of Health reports that there is still insufficient evidence to provide the efficacy of a biotin supplement, signs of biotin deficiency include hair loss, skin rashes, brittle nails, etc. The jury may still be out about its ability to deliver scientifically-proven results, but reviews on popular biotin supplements say otherwise. More on that, below.

At any rate, biotin is considered harmless if you take more than the RDA. If you notice more breakouts than usual after taking high doses of biotin, you may want to scale back. There isn’t a proven link between biotin and acne breakouts, but this micronutrient can reduce your body’s absorption of other nutrients (including ones that naturally help your body combat acne).

Toxic Ingredients to Avoid in Hair Supplements

When it comes to beauty, non-toxic (when possible!) is the way to go, and organic is always a plus. Luckily, there are a variety of clean supplements that help restore hair strength and luminosity on the market. You can find a full list of ingredients to avoid here, but these are a few harmful offenders:

  • Sulfates (cost-effective cleansing agents)
  • Parabens (preservatives)
  • Denatured alcohols (drying to the scalp)
  • Synthetic fragrances (an array of potential irritants hidden in artificially-fragranced formulas)
  • Formaldehyde (currently under investigation for potential safety concerns)

How to Choose the Best Supplement for Hair Growth

When it comes to choosing the most optimal hair growth supplement, you want to look for clinically-backed products that have been tested for efficacy and quality. Keep in mind that most supplements take at least three months in order to build up stores of various vitamins, minerals, and compounds, so having patience is key.

Before buying a hair growth supplement, chat with your doctor or dermatologist. Get tested for any potential nutrient deficiencies and make sure you choose a supplement that won’t cause allergies or other adverse effects. Furthermore, read all labels and steer clear of non-natural or chemical ingredients. Ideally, the ingredients are plant-based and come from organic sources.
