I married Adam when I was 25 years old. He was my first serious boyfriend, and considering our decade-plus age difference and the fact that we worked together, it may not have seemed like the wisest decision I’d ever made. But I’d never been so sure of anything in my life—even if someone had tried, there would have been a zero percent chance of talking me out of it.

This week we’re celebrating our fourteenth wedding anniversary. It sounds absolutely crazy to say it. We’ve been parents together for a decade, and I can’t believe that we’ll soon have a middle schooler in the house. I remember hearing that after being married for a few years, things would inevitably fizzle—passion would take a backseat when we had kids, one of us would get the seven-year itch. I kept waiting for it to happen, but somehow our relationship just kept getting better. I don’t claim to know our “secret,” but I do think it helps that we both believe we struck gold when we found each other.

So in honor of our anniversary, I thought I’d share a few things I’ve learned about long-term love after fourteen years with my soulmate. Everyone’s relationship is different, but these are lessons that have helped us navigate the challenging moments. They’ve inspired a relationship that’s built on trust, mutual respect, passion, unfading attraction, and a shared excitement that ensures our life together is never boring. Take what you want, leave the rest.

Engaged in London, 2008

Let it go

I’ve seen relationships fall apart over small annoyances that build up over time, slowly growing into something bigger. I decided early on that I wouldn’t let it happen to us—I chose to accept the things that probably aren’t going to change, and be very selective about what I made into an issue. When I start to feel irritated, I try to ask myself “Could I laugh about this?” (BTW, this is a great strategy to employ with your kid, your co-worker, your mom, your sister… )

Newly married in Greece

Turn toward “bids for connection”

Let’s talk about bids for connection, a concept I learned from Dr. John Gottman’s research on healthy marriages. Essentially, a “bid” is an attempt from one partner for attention, affirmation, or connection. It could be a wink, a touch, a request for help, sharing something vulnerable, or a suggestion to do something together. When you recognize that your partner has made a bid for connection, you have a choice: you can consciously turn toward that bid by acknowledging it, or you can turn away from that bid by ignoring or rejecting it.

Research shows that this “turning toward” or “turning away” is extremely important for the health of a relationship. Missing a few bids for connection is normal, but when it becomes the norm, it can lead to a relationship’s demise. It’s about paying attention and prioritizing. (Highly recommend reading more about this in the Gottman’s book.)

Traveling with babies

See your partner with fresh eyes

A few years ago, I went to a dinner where I was seated next to sex therapist Esther Perel. One of my biggest takeaways from our conversation was that we’re most drawn to our partners when there’s a distinct separation between us. Even in long-term relationships, we’re not one and the same—we never really “belong” to one another.

One example of this is when we consciously choose to see our partner through the eyes of another. For instance, if Adam and I are at a crowded event, I might watch him from across the room deep in conversation, and I try to view him as though he’s a stranger. Creepy? Maybe (lol), but just TRUST ME, it’s sexy. There’s something about seeing your person with fresh eyes that brings a wave of those feelings from when you first met. It always reminds me why I fell in love with him in the first place.

Ringing in 2018

Let them know you want them

Now that you’ve remembered how hot your partner is, let them know it. Tell them, touch them, flirt with them. Let them know there’s no one else you’d rather spend time with. Feeling desired somehow makes you more desirable, and it sets a whole new energy in motion.

Building our dreams in California

Cool off, then say I’m sorry

Arguing is inevitable, but the way we fight is the real kicker. Adam and I can both be stubborn, but over the years we’ve gotten a lot better at being the first to say I’m sorry. We’ve learned that it’s helpful for us to take a break and cool off so that we can honestly ask ourselves what role each of us played in the disagreement. Owning it and apologizing goes a long way. Usually, we both realize that whatever we were fighting about wasn’t that important anyway. When we release the need to be right, we can move forward together.

Always learning, always growing

Always have something to grow toward together

Shared goals and dreams for the future have always been our favorite thing to talk about. Whether we’re starting a workout routine, landscaping the backyard, launching a business, or saving for a bucket list vacation, a shared challenge brings so much vitality to our relationship. Some of our best conversations happen when we pour a glass of wine and share our dreams for the future. Even if we don’t actually do all of them, it reminds us that we’re on each others’ team, building something together.

Skin That Shines: The Power of Food

We’ve said it once, but we’ll say it again: what you put on your plate matters. The food you eat has the remarkable ability to transform your skin from dull to dazzling. Picture this—every bite you take delivers a potent blend of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to nourish and revitalize your skin cells. In turn, you can actually turn back the clock on cellular aging. And who doesn’t want that? From increasing collagen production, to enhancing hydration and reducing inflammation, nutrition holds the key to unlocking your skin’s potential. Feed your skin to fuel your inner glow!

How does nutrition impact the skin?

Nutrition plays a crucial role in the health and appearance of our skin. Food is energy, yes, but it also nourishes our largest organ—the skin. Here are several ways in which nutrition impacts the skin:

1. Skin function

A well-balanced diet ensures your skin receives nutrients to maintain function. Vitamins A, C, E, and D—as well as minerals such as zinc and selenium—support various processes within the skin, including collagen production, cell regeneration, and protection against oxidative stress.

2. Collagen production

Given its popularity in the wellness world, you’re probably familiar with collagen. Collagen is a protein that provides structure, elasticity, and firmness. All of these are important for skin health! Certain nutrients, such as vitamin C, play a vital role in collagen synthesis. Therefore, consuming foods rich in vitamin C (citrus, strawberries, bell peppers, etc.) helps support collagen production, promoting skin elasticity.

3. Hydration and moisture

Adequate hydration is essential for maintaining skin moisture and preventing dryness. Water and hydration are crucial for healthy skin, as they help flush out toxins and ensure proper circulation, giving the skin a plump and radiant appearance.

4. Protection from environmental damage

Antioxidant-rich foods, such as berries, leafy greens, and citrus fruits, neutralize free radicals and help safeguard the skin against environmental stressors. Fight pollution and UV radiation with foods for glowing skin!

5. Minimizes inflammation and acne

Some studies suggest that highly processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats may contribute to inflammation and worsen conditions like acne. Conversely, research shows a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats may have anti-inflammatory effects and promote clearer skin.

What is the best age to eat foods for glowing skin?

Any age! For some, the first physical signs of aging can appear around age 25: fine lines, wrinkles, brittle nails, fragile hair, and joint problems. While most think of aging in the form of skin appearance, natural aging also affects everything from our energy levels and body weight to heart health, bone density, and more. Ideally, start focusing on eating more foods for glowing skin by your mid-20s. If you missed that boat, don’t stress. It’s never too late to make impactful changes.

Foods to Minimize for Healthy Skin

While there are no specific foods that universally harm the skin (unless an allergy is present), certain dietary choices may negatively affect it. For example, sugar. When we constantly consume refined sugar, we’re also consuming refined carbs. And this raises blood sugar levels. In turn, insulin levels increase, pushing excess sugar into your cells, which can lead to inflammation—and potentially turn into acne. Unfortunately, you may find that dairy products do the same. Last but not least, be mindful of alcohol and caffeine. Excessive alcohol consumption can dehydrate the skin, leading to redness and inflammation. One too many cups of caffeine can worsen skin conditions, too.

8 Foods For Glowing Skin

Without further ado, below are eight foods to eat for glowing skin. From wintry citrus to creamy avocados, incorporate these ingredients into your next meal plan.

Berries

‘Tis the season for berries! Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are packed with antioxidants that help combat free radicals, which are responsible for skin aging. These vibrant fruits are rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as anthocyanins, which promote collagen production and protect against sun damage. Whether enjoyed on their own, added to smoothies, or sprinkled over yogurt, incorporating berries into your diet can contribute to a healthier, more luminous complexion.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens—including spinach, kale, and Swiss chard—are nutritional powerhouses. They work wonders for your skin. Packed with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals like iron and folate, these greens help promote a clear and youthful complexion. Moreover, their high water content helps hydrate the skin, keeping it supple and glowing. Enjoy leafy greens in salads, stir-fries, or as a fiber-rich addition to your morning smoothies to reap their skin-loving benefits.

Avocado

Known as a beauty food, avocado is a nutrient-dense fruit that boasts healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Their monounsaturated fats help maintain the skin’s moisture levels, resulting in a soft and supple complexion. Additionally, avocados are rich in vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant, protecting the skin from oxidative damage and promoting skin cell regeneration. Enjoy avocado slices on toast, add them to salads, or blend them into creamy sauces for a radiant glow.

Nuts

Nuts are an incredible source of essential fatty acids, which help maintain skin elasticity, promote cell turnover, and reduce inflammation. Almonds, specifically, contain vitamin E—an antioxidant that helps protect the skin from free radicals. Vitamin E also helps maintain skin moisture. Furthermore, walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential fats that help maintain hydration and overall skin health. Lastly, Brazil nuts are an excellent source of selenium, a mineral that plays a crucial role in antioxidant defense systems. Selenium helps protect the skin from sun damage. Snack on raw nuts as a blood sugar-friendly snack or toss them into your favorite granola recipe.

Seeds

Like nuts, seeds provide essential nutrients for skin health. They’re rich in vitamins E and zinc, which aid in healing damaged skin and protecting it from environmental stressors. Chia seeds and flaxseeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation and maintain the skin’s moisture levels. They also contain antioxidants, fiber, and selenium. Furthermore, pumpkin seeds are packed with zinc, magnesium, and iron—hello, skin cell regeneration! Sprinkle seeds over your salads to nourish your skin from within. You can also add seeds to your go-to muffin recipe for added nourishment and texture.

Citrus

Citrus fruits, including oranges, grapefruits, and lemons, are renowned for their high vitamin C content. This essential vitamin plays a key role in collagen synthesis, promoting skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C also possesses potent antioxidant properties, protecting the skin from damage caused by free radicals. Start your day with a refreshing adrenal cocktail, or incorporate slices of these fruits into your water or salads for a radiant complexion.

Sweet Potatoes

Packed with beneficial nutrients, sweet potatoes provide multiple skin-enhancing properties. Rich in beta-carotene, sweet potatoes are converted into vitamin A, which supports skin cell production, turnover, and a healthy complexion. Additionally, their vitamin C content helps shield the skin from free radicals and oxidative stress, minimizing signs of aging (and restoring radiance!). Last but not least, their fiber content aids in digestion, contributing to a clearer and healthier complexion. Deliciously sweet and versatile, sweet potatoes are tasty in everything from frittatas to salads.

Seaweed

Seaweed—such as nori, kelp, and spirulina—is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It provides essential minerals like zinc and selenium, as well as vitamins A and E, which promote skin health and combat oxidative stress. Additionally, seaweed is high in vitamin C, aiding in the production of collagen, promoting skin firmness, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. We love seaweed’s skin-nourishing nutrients in traditional sushi rolls, deconstructed sushi bowls, and roasted as a snack with avocado.

Less Common Foods For Glowing Skin

Popular foods aside, there are also less commonly known ingredients that support glowing skin. If they’re available to you, incorporate foods like aloe vera (supports hydration and detoxification), papaya (encourages healthy digestion), fresh turmeric (to lower inflammation), and sauerkraut (aids in a diverse gut microbiome). When in doubt, diversify! Skin-loving ingredients come in various colors, shapes, and sizes.

It’s important to note that while nutrition is a vital aspect of skin health, it should be complemented by a holistic skincare routine, sun protection, and other lifestyle factors like stress management and sufficient sleep. Consulting with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian can provide personalized guidance on optimizing nutrition for optimal skin health.

We don’t always need to be productive. In fact, that pressure can be incredibly exhausting. And some experts even advocate for a six-hour workday in lieu of the eight (ten? twelve?) hour days we often end up working. In spite of the fact that we undeniably work a lot and most of us feel so busy (all the time!), we can still find ourselves at the end of the day feeling—shockingly—bored. So, I’ve been making a list of things to do at night so I don’t end up zoning out in front of the TV.

After I’ve powered down the computer on a night with no plans, I often find myself looking for something mood-boosting to do. But instead of immediately reaching for our screens again (no judgment, we’re all guilty of the mindless social media scroll or zoning out to endless episodes of a show) sometimes, it’s nice to spend our evening in a different way.

70 Things to Do at Night (That Don’t Involve Screens)

Whether it’s something thoughtful for someone else, an activity that gets your creative juices flowing, or a way to spend your time that’s actually productive and knocks out a lingering task on your to-do list, we rounded up 70 things to do at night that will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to kick your boredom to the curb.

(Psst… If you have kids coming to you saying the infamous, “Mom, I’m boreddddd,” try one of these fun ideas geared toward kids.)

Something to Take Care of You

1. Give your nails some love. No professional manicure necessary—you don’t even need to paint them! Just shape, file, and buff your way to nice nails. We love this beautiful set for nourished and polished nails.

2. Give yourself an at-home facial. A mini facial might be just what the doctor, er, esthetician ordered. Cleanse, mask, tone, serum, moisturize. Your skin deserves it.

3. Practice saying no. Is saying no hard for you? We get it. Read these inspiring articles on the art of saying no from Create and Cultivate, Darling Magazine, and yours truly.

4. Unroll your yoga mat. It’ll feel good to move your body whether it’s for 10 minutes or 40.

5. Go on a walk. Some fresh evening air will do you good! Try to turn your phone on silent or airplane mode. Better yet, leave it at home.

6. Take care of your scalp. It deserves more attention than it gets, here’s why. While you’re at it, check out these clean shampoos that actually work.

7. Exfoliate your body. We’re talking head to toe.

8. Look back and think about the ways you’ve grown. It’s easy to skip from season to season of life, without feeling like much has changed. Read this, and reflect on the beauty of unseen transformation.

9. Warm up your complexion. Boost your summer glow with one of our favorite non-toxic face tanners.

10. Try out lymphatic massage. Meet your new addiction. Once you see how good you feel and look, this will be a new staple in your wellness routine.

11. Dream about a new haircut. Scroll this post to see if there’s a fresh style calling your name.

12. Take a detox bath. Light a candle, pour in some Epsom salts and soak up the bliss while gently supporting your body’s detox process.

13. Bring out your journal. Whether you like to write in the morning or at night, an evening journal sesh will set your mind right for the mornings to come. Unload the day’s feelings on paper and you’ll feel a lot better for it—promise!

Something Chill

14. Watch one of these 90s movies. I know we said no TV, but there’s nothing like a good throwback.

15. Online shop for this season’s trendiest shoes. Boots of all colors, heel heights and lengths are always in style come fall. Madewell has some of the best picks.

16. Browse listings looking for your dream house. Anyone else have a side hobby of looking at houses on Zillow? I love trying to find the most unique listing and comparing my pick with a friend’s. It’s fun to dream right?

17. Put together a puzzle. The perfect mindless activity. We love this fun, patterned portrait and bright and punchy still-life.

18. Dock your tech. Spend the rest of the evening tech-free. That means no emails, no social media scrolling, and no TV. Instead, grab a cup of tea, hop in the bath and wind down.

19. Stock up on sunscreen. Sunscreen is always a must, so make sure you’re stocked. Here are the best sunscreens for every skin type.

20. Hide a few little love notes. Write some simple and sweet notes and tuck them in your significant other’s coat pockets, bags or drawers. It’ll be a sweet surprise and doesn’t take much effort.

21. Upgrade your summer loungewear game. Move over sweatsuits, the house dress era is here to stay. Shop everything from billowy and breezy to simple and chic.

22. Send a handwritten note. A love note, thank you note, or just a note to say hi. We guarantee it will make someone’s day.

23. Listen to some music. Without multitasking! Truly listen. For a dose of nostalgia and good vibes, play your favorite music videos from the 90s or early aughts.

24. Play a game. It’s so easy to zone out with TV when boredom in the evening strikes. We have a better idea though. Grab your partner, kids, or some friends and try out one of these fun games!

25. Call your mom. You’ll get some much-needed mama love and she’ll be thrilled to hear from you. Everyone benefits from a check-in, especially when it’s spontaneous—the perfect close to both of your days.

26. Make a gratitude list. It can be so healing to be intentional about finding the beauty and good in our lives. Jot down a few things you’re grateful for. You’ll be surprised how many there are.

27. Snuggle up with a good book. There’s nothing like a fiery page-turner to keep your mind sharp and senses engaged. Check out one of these picks to get you out of a rut.

Something Productive

28. Clean out your fridge. Maybe not the most exciting thing to do, but necessary nonetheless. Once that’s done, read this article for inspo on what to stock on your newly cleared shelves.

29. Swap your products for cleaner ones. There can be not-so-great ingredients lurking in our cleaning products. However, we’ve rounded up the best non-toxic cleaning products that actually work. Time to add to cart.

30. Spend some quality time with your calendar. Take advantage of these unscheduled moments to look forward to your week and check in on your agenda. Set your priorities for the rest of the week or weekend, schedule workouts and time for self-care, put a hangout with a friend on the calendar, and make sure childcare is locked down. Hello to a calm, clear week.

31. Get your mending kit out. Sew a button onto that cardigan that’s been missing one for ages.

32. Rotate your mattress. The sign of a responsible adult? Maybe, but it certainly gets overlooked. Boost your mattress’s lifespan by rotating it a few times a year at the very least.

33. Update your resume. Even if you’re not in the market for a new job, make sure it’s up to date. That way you can easily tweak it when it’s time to search for a new job or opening. If you’re itching for a career change, read this first. While you’re at it, learn more about developing your personal brand.

34. Organize your closet. A place we visit every day that can quickly turn into a nightmare.  If you’re needing a boost of inspo to get you going, read all about transforming a small closet into a thing of beauty.

35. Purge your beauty products. Dried nail polish? A crusty bottle of that serum that broke you out? Chances are, you have some products that are basically empty, old, or just don’t work for you. Sort into a toss-and-share pile. Anything old or expired gets tossed and anything barely used can be given to a friend.

36. Clean out your purse. Simple, easy and so satisfying. Say au revoir to gum wrappers, hair ties, and empty granola bar wrappers that can certainly pile up.

37. Delete old screenshots on your phone. Sort, using the favorite button, and make a note of the images you want to print and frame. Delete your grocery list from last week and that random picture you can’t remember why you wanted to save.

38. Clean one small thing. You don’t have to tackle the whole house. Just one part of it! Finally, take on your oven, dust your ceiling fans, or give your shower head a quick rinse. You’ll feel better knowing that your home is squeaky clean.

39. Check in on your finances. It’s easy to let weeks (months) go by without checking in on things. Look in on your savings and checking accounts. Where can you cut back and save more? Are you still subscribing to services you no longer use? Take a look before your next credit card bill!

40. Unsubscribe from mailing lists. How do our inboxes get so big? Set a timer for 15 minutes, and unclog your inbox. It really just takes a simple click. Unsubscribe from all of your spam emails in just a few clicks by visiting Unroll.me and finally achieve inbox zero.

41. Refresh your bedding. There’s nothing like snuggling into fresh sheets after a hot shower. Treat your future self to clean sheets—she’ll thank you later.

42. Browse for gifts. Does anyone else get overwhelmed during the holiday season? It’s never too early to scout out thoughtful gifts for the people you love. Bookmark gifts for birthdays, holidays, or pick-me-ups for the people in your life. Again, your future self will thank you.

Something Creative

43. Write a haiku. Fun, simple, and sometimes silly, blow off some steam with a quick haiku. Share with someone, or keep it for yourself.

44. Dance. Whether you do a dance workout or crank up a fun song and shake it out, there’s nothing like a happy boost of endorphins to cure boredom.

45. Upgrade your home with some vintage décor. Shop for a deal from one of our favorite online vintage stores. And even if you don’t pull the trigger, virtual window shopping is fun.

46. Plan a dinner party. Instead of zoning out tonight, grab a paper and pencil or your phone and start hashing out the details of a little get-together—the guests, menu, drinks, and games. Can’t think of a reason to throw a party? Celebrate a great new cocktail recipe, a promotion, or just because your apartment is clean and you want to show it off.

47. Tweak a t-shirt that isn’t quite right. Have a t-shirt you like but never wear? Cut off the bottom to make a cute crop top or the sleeves for some easy muscle tee vibes.

48. Make some DIY flower-pressed art. Grab some blooms and books and create a new piece of art to hang in your home.

49. Get out your paint brushes. Whether you watercolor or pull out the acrylics, there’s nothing quite as relaxing as the swirl of paint on canvas.

50. Take a virtual class. Try this Masterclass on the fundamentals of French pastries, this one from The MOMA on fashion as design, or soap making or figure drawing from Udemy.

51. Redecorate (or rearrange!). Get your creative juices flowing by emptying your bookshelves and piecing them back together. You never know what might look good until you shake it up and restart!

Something Delicious

52. Recreate your favorite restaurant meal. You don’t have to be much of a chef, just grab the ingredients and find a similar recipe online to try out.

53. Meal plan for the week. The week always goes better when I plan ahead. Not only do I eat healthier, but less food goes to waste since I’ve put a bit of thought and intention into how I’m going to use all of my ingredients.

54. Plan your breakfast for tomorrow. How about a hearty and healthy start to your day, rather than a quickly-downed black coffee and protein bar? Your metabolism will thank you. Maybe some overnight oats?

55. Perfect your go-to cocktail. Research how to make your favorite drink, grab the ingredients, and mix it up at home. Once you get it just right, serve it up at your next dinner party!

56. Pickle some vegetables. One of the easiest ways to upgrade a dish is with pickled veg, and it’s even sweeter when you have them on hand. Try this quick pickle recipe for everything from red onions to cucumbers! Leave them for an hour and munch on them as a snack later this evening, or pop them in the fridge overnight to eat with lunch or your morning avocado toast!

57. Make the most delicious blueberry muffin. We did the work for you and tested five recipes to find the winner. Breakfast for the week is solved (if you don’t eat them all fresh out of the oven).

58. Cook something from a physical cookbook. It’s easy to get in a rut and leave those pretty cookbooks collecting dust. Crack them open and cook something fun.

59. Bake something delicious. There’s no boredom buster like baking. We have some ideas for you.

60. Make yourself a snack board. Even if you’re spending the evening solo, there’s nothing quite as fun as a pretty board. Add cheese, cured meats, olives, nuts, some fresh fruit and veggies, crackers, and a touch of jam or honey. My favorite dinner.

61. Make a reservation at a restaurant you’ve been wanting to try. Invite a friend, get it on the calendar, and make a night of it! In the meantime, make a list of the ones you’d like to hit and start crossing them off.

62. Take an online wine class. Whether you’re into sparkling rosé or Argentinian Malbec, get to know how it’s made, who the best producers are, and what pairs well with it. You’ll impress your next dinner date or help your friends decide on a bottle to share the next time you go out.

63. Brew up a cup of tasty tea. We love this anti-inflammatory tea or this warming cinnamon tea before bed for a good night’s sleep.

Something Just for Fun

64. Color-code your bookshelves. There’s something that’s just so joy-sparking about rainbows.

65. Adventure to your neighborhood lending libraries. Set out on a walk with a mission in mind. Scope your neighborhood for lending libraries to drop off some of your old reads and find new treasures. I have three just within a few blocks’ radius, and it’s a joy to discover what’s inside every time.

66. Make a playlist. I love making playlists for the seasons, my (many) different moods, and even just the week. Have some fun on Spotify and curate songs to your liking.

67. Have breakfast for dinner. Pancakes on a Tuesday? Nothing makes me feel more like a kid.

69. Hop on your bike. Take advantage of a nice evening and ride leisurely through your city or town.

70. Go out for ice cream. At the end of the day, is there anything better?

In the realm of women’s health, there lies a deeply personal journey that intertwines our physical and emotional well-being: our hormones. They’re responsible for everything from our first menstrual cycle to menopause (and everything in between). What comes with the territory? Unexpected twists and turns. Enter: breast cysts. While they’re typically benign, the discomfort (and sheer terror!) they cause is a universal experience. With that in mind, today we’re delving deeper into the relationship between hormonal health and breast cysts. Together, let’s decode this intricate connection—giving you the tools to know what’s happening beneath the surface.

Understanding Breast Cysts

So, what are breast cysts? In essence, they’re fluid-filled sacs that can develop in breast tissue. These pockets of fluid vary in size and consistency, ranging from tiny cysts (that are only detected through imaging tests) to larger, palpable masses. They can cause both discomfort and anxiety. Although the exact causes of breast cysts are not fully understood, hormonal imbalances are believed to play a significant role. Particularly, estrogen dominance. However, regular monitoring—combined with effective management strategies—can help alleviate symptoms and ensure overall breast health.

Breast Cysts: Signs And Symptoms

These vary from woman-to-woman, but common signs include:

  • breast tenderness
  • swelling
  • the presence of a lump that is smooth and movable.

These symptoms may become more pronounced before menstruation when hormonal changes are at their peak. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult your healthcare professional for a proper evaluation.

How are breast cysts diagnosed?

Diagnosing breast cysts typically involves a combination of physical examinations and diagnostic tests. Your healthcare provider may conduct a clinical breast exam and order additional imaging tests such as a breast ultrasound or mammography to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other potential concerns.

Can you get breast cysts in your 20s?

Possibly, yes. Breast cysts are one of the most common benign breast conditions, particularly in women aged 30 to 50. In other words, they impact premenopausal women. Also known as fibroadenomas, this benign (noncancerous) lump can appear during a person’s reproductive years. That said, breast cysts can also appear with menopause—when a woman’s hormones are rapidly changing. In this case, they often diminish once menopause is complete.

Can hormonal imbalance cause breast cysts?

Truthfully, there’s very little in the human body that hormones don’t impact. Said differently: our hormones are like conductors. They orchestrate a symphony of influential processes—from head to toe. And as they fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, which can lead to changes in everything from mood and appetite to breast tissue. Estrogen and progesterone, specifically, have a profound impact on breast tissue. In fact, an imbalance of these two hormones is associated with an increased risk of breast cysts.

Spoiler alert: it’s significant. In many ways, estrogen plays a crucial role in the female body. It’s responsible for everything from breast growth and the widening of hips during puberty to regulating the menstrual cycle as a whole. Not to mention, estrogen helps prepare the uterus for pregnancy!

That said, estrogen needs its partner-in-crime, progesterone, to maintain optimal health. When estrogen exceeds progesterone, estrogen dominance occurs. Hello, cysts. And unfortunately, these cysts often become more pronounced during times of increased estrogen levels.

How To Lower Estrogen In Your Body

How can you lower estrogen in your body? Thankfully, there are a few effective ways to address estrogen dominance:

Eat a balanced diet. Consume a diet rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Incorporate cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and kale, as they contain compounds that can support hormone balance. Ideally, limit the consumption of processed foods, sugar, and inflammatory fats.

Stress management. Chronic stress can disrupt hormone balance. Implement stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or engaging in hobbies and activities that help you relax and unwind.

Avoid environmental estrogens. Minimize exposure to synthetic estrogens, also known as xenoestrogens, found in certain plastics, pesticides, and personal care products. Opt for natural and organic alternatives whenever possible.

Support liver function. The liver plays a vital role in estrogen metabolism and elimination. Support liver health by reducing alcohol consumption, avoiding excessive exposure to toxins, and incorporating liver-supportive foods like leafy greens, beets, and turmeric into your diet.

Consider supplements. Certain supplements may help rebalance hormone levels. Chat with your healthcare provider about options such as DIM (diindolylmethane), calcium-d-glucarate, or herbal supplements like chasteberry and evening primrose oil.

How To Manage Breast Cysts

Fortunately, in most cases, breast cysts are harmless and don’t require treatment. However, if you experience discomfort or persistent symptoms, there are steps you can take to manage the condition effectively.

1. Restore hormonal balance

This goes without saying, but restoring hormonal balance is crucial in managing breast cysts. Lifestyle modifications, including engaging in regular exercise and managing stress levels can contribute to hormonal health. In some cases, hormonal contraceptives or hormone therapy may be prescribed to restore balance.

2. Make dietary changes

A nutritious diet is key for hormonal health. Opt for a well-balanced eating plan that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Reducing the consumption of processed foods, caffeine, and alcohol may also help alleviate symptoms associated with breast cysts.

3. Apply a warm compress

Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can provide temporary relief from discomfort. Applying warm compresses or wearing a supportive bra can also help ease symptoms!

4. Implement regular monitoring

Don’t underestimate the power of regular breast self-exams, as well as routine mammograms or ultrasounds. These are essential for monitoring breast cysts and detecting any changes. Staying vigilant and reporting any new or concerning symptoms to your healthcare provider is crucial.

Everything You Need to Know About Ear Seeds, According to an Expert

Acupressure is a an ancient remedy for stress and stagnancy. It can relieve your body of pain, tension, poor digestion, headaches, menstrual cramps, insomnia, and even anxiety. The results vary from person to person. But the potential benefits could be life changing. Especially when delivered through wearable, non-invasive devices like ear seeds.

But what are ear seeds? You might have seen them on your wellness bestie, worn like a badge of honor like cupping bruises or a post-facial flush. They’re little pallets arranged on the ear to aid in acupressure without having to lie on a “bed of nails” (though the viral acupressure mat is worth trying). With many doctors on board, you’ll even find that plenty of acupressure products are HSA eligible!

I spoke with Dr. James Walker, a clinical doctor and contracted medical advisor at Welzo.com, about the benefits of ear seeds and what to look for if you’re interested in trying them yourself.

What are ear seeds?

Ear seeds, also known as auricular seeds or ear acupressure seeds, are small seeds or metal pellets that are placed on specific points of the outer ear. They are often used in auriculotherapy, which is a form of alternative medicine based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Some studies suggest positive effects for certain conditions, such as pain management or reducing anxiety, but more rigorous research is needed to draw definitive conclusions.

It’s important to note that ear seeds should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment. If you have any specific health concerns, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate course of action.

There are two main types of ear seeds:

  • Vaccaria Seeds. These are tiny seeds from the Vaccaria plant. They are the most commonly used type of ear seeds.
  • Metal Pellets. Some ear seeds are made of metal, such as stainless steel or gold-plated magnets. These provide a stronger stimulation than Vaccaria seeds.

The Benefits of Ear Seeds

Advocates of ear seeds claim various benefits, including:

  • Stress relief and relaxation
  • Pain management, such as for headaches, back pain, or joint pain
  • Support for smoking cessation or weight loss
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Reduction of anxiety or depression symptoms
  • Enhanced energy and overall well-being

Tips for Application

  1. Locate the specific points on the outer ear corresponding to the desired area or condition.
  2. Clean the ear and the skin around the chosen points with alcohol wipes.
  3. Use tweezers to apply the ear seeds gently onto the points. Apply enough pressure to keep them in place.
  4. Massage the seeds gently for a few seconds to stimulate the points.

You can apply ear seeds yourself or with the help of a friend or family member. The process is relatively simple and can be done at home. However, if you have any concerns or specific health conditions, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional or an acupuncturist before using.

Possible Side Effects

Ear seeds are generally considered safe, with minimal side effects. However, some potential risks include:

  • Skin irritation or allergic reactions to the adhesive or the material of the seeds.
  • Discomfort or tenderness at the site of application.
  • Infection if the ear or the skin is not adequately cleaned before applying the seeds.
  • Incorrect placement may lead to ineffective results or discomfort.
