I came of makeup age in the era of BareMinerals, a brand that popularized the idea of loose powder foundation for a large swath of mall-going millennials. Try as I might, however, I never quite took to the lighter-than-air formulas or how they dusted onto my skin. But after a makeup artist suggested I look into powder for my combination skin type, I set out to find the best powder foundation—one that masters the art of the barely-there look while still offering ample coverage.

Internet research regularly points to the same brands (you’ll see your Diors, Chanels, Urban Decays, and MACs), so I did what any red-blooded, mall-going millennial would do—went to my local Sephora to ask what their top-selling powder foundations are. The good people with headsets swiftly led me to the aisles for Laura Mercier (a classic) and Make Up For Ever (a MUA fave). “It’s what most professional makeup artists use on photoshoots,” I was told of the latter.

I’ve been using my color-matched compacts for the past few weeks, and while they’re both fantastic options, I have thoughts on both (and a clear winner). But before I touch on that…

The Benefits of Powder Foundation

Unlike cream or liquid foundation, powder foundation doesn’t contain any water. Comprised mostly of finely milled pigments, emollients, and often talc, powder foundations are great for normal, combination, and oily skin types, especially ones that have oil-controlling ingredients. (Dry or mature complexions can blend powder foundation with a liquid primer to lock in a bit of hydration.)

If you’re looking for light coverage or a way to control shine, powder foundation is a fantastic option, especially during the hot summer months.

Of course, too much can lead to an overly matte finish (or the dreaded cakey look) and can leave skin feeling completely dried out. So the product you use (and how you apply it) makes a world of difference.

Below are my thoughts on Sephora’s most popular powder foundations (at least at the Dallas location) along with a few other hits that offer lighter-than-air coverage for every budget.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Best Overall: Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Foundation Powder

This is the stuff. It completely obliterated all my iffy feelings about powder foundations. Well, almost. As my Sephora friends mentioned, this lovely matte finish can be drying, even for combination skin. But a nice liquid primer or a few drops of your favorite face oil should help balance things out.

The coverage is beautifully buildable, and my skin (when properly moisturized before application) felt like silk. The super fine particles create a lovely blurring effect but still leave room for things like freckles to shine. This one did require a bit more work to ensure the powder was evenly dispersed compared to Make Up For Ever.

What’s to Love: The silky feel and no-makeup finish.

What’s Not to Love: The price. But the quality (even of the compact and included sponge) is worth it.

BeautyTok Favorite: Make Up For Ever HD Skin Matte Velvet Blurring Powder Foundation

I was a little less familiar with Make Up For Ever, but if it’s good enough for the fine folks on BeautyTok, it’s certainly good enough for me. While I didn’t love it quite as much as Laura Mercier’s powder foundation, I was impressed with how smoothly the powder went on, especially considering how fine the particles are. (Also, kudos to the physical compact, which survived my butter fingers dropping it on the cold hard floor.)

Make Up For Ever’s powder felt more hydrating than Laura Mercier, though both foundations will eventually leave skin feeling dry if you don’t apply a liquid primer.

What’s to Love: It’s almost impossible to mess up a Make Up For Ever application, which swipes on ridiculously smooth.

What’s Not to Love: While it had a lighter touch than Laura Mercier, it also wasn’t quite as blurring. (I like my coverage to, well, cover.) It also didn’t leave my skin feeling as silky.

Best for Buildable Coverage: Wander Beauty Wanderlust Powder Foundation

This foundation has me shook. As a forever fan of the dewy, high-shine look, I hesitated to try something that would leave me with a more matte, poreless complexion. But after a few breakouts and even bug bites on my décolletage, I decided to dive in. I love that it wears like a second skin. This foundation covers up breakouts and red spots while also evening out my complexion. And with areas that see a little more shine like my T-zone, I’m happy to have a go-to for absorbing oil. Final note: Being someone whose skin sees a lot during my daytime hours (between workouts, meetings, and the like), I’m glad to have something I can rely on and reapply throughout the day for customizable coverage when I need it. — Isabelle, Managing Editor

What’s to Love: This foundation comes in 12 shades, offering a premium color match that’s far more accurate than its competitors. I also love the Rubicell applicator, which makes for easy subsequent applications and even makes it easy to pair the foundation with my tinted liquid moisturizer.

What’s Not to Love: While I love the lightweight formulation, I wore this during one particularly sticky beginning-of-June wedding. After an hour out in the relentless humidity, suffice it to say, this did not hold up. (But honestly, what could?)

No makeup.

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes red flushing and visible blood veins to appear across the skin. Symptoms can range from mild to excessive, with triggers varying across individuals. Unfortunately for those who experience flare-ups on a regular basis, there is no definitive cure—but the discomfort can be managed with proper skincare, such as Dermelect’s newly released Redness Rehab Sensitive Skin Soothing Cream.

The balancing treatment was created for the sole purpose of soothing distressed skin; it instantly relieves dryness, tightness, redness and irritation upon application, making it a stand-out option for those with ultra-sensitive complexions. It features 10 key ingredients that make these results possible, such as skin-soothing agent allantoin to soften dry patches, licorice root extract to even out discoloration and jojoba extract for extra hydration.

The cream also brings plenty of preventative aging benefits; willow leaf extract for firming sagging areas, grape seed extract for guarding against environmental aggressors and green tea extract that acts as both a UV protectant and anti-inflammatory.

Shoppers with rosacea say its the one of the few treatments they’ve found that calms down their skin during intense flare-ups. On reviewer shared that they’ve “gotten compliments” on how even their skin became after just three weeks of use, while another noted that the broken veins they typically deal with “are so much better” after routine applications.

“I have had rosacea and eczema on my cheeks for over 10 years,” wrote one reviewer. “As I’ve gotten older it’s worsened. Redness Rehab by Dermelect has been one of the few face lotions that my extremely sensitive and delicate cheeks tolerate, but it also tampers done and lessens the redness. I also have less acne and whiteheads due to irritation.”

A 40-year-old reviewer also prone to redness raved about the cream, too: “I have used one full jar of this and it’s the only cream I’ve found that doesn’t sting when applied. The veins on the sides of my nose are also not as visible. I’m going to continue to use and hope the benefits will last.”

It’s near-impossible to find an eye cream that actually makes you look 10, 20 or 30 years younger. That’s just not how it works. However, there are formulas that can come pretty dang close to providing drastic results, whether you’re dealing with fine lines, dark circles, crepey skin or puffiness. Fortunately, we found an anti-aging eye cream that helps improve all of the above, and it comes from a celeb-loved brand.

SkinCeuticals’ A.G.E. Eye Complex deserves a spot in your skincare routine just as much as its cult-fave vitamin C serum does. The best-seller tackles crow’s feet, dark circles and puffiness for dry and normal skin types. In fact, the brand dubs it an “anti-wrinkle eye cream.” The “A.G.E.” stands for advanced glycation end-products. Translation from SkinCeuticals: “Glycation, a major factor of intrinsic aging, occurs when excess sugar molecules bind to collagen and elastin fibers and prompt the formation of advanced glycation end-products (A.G.E.) that may lead to the appearance of aging. As a result, glycated collagen and elastin fibers lose the ability to function normally, and the body cannot break them down and replace them, leading to severe wrinkling of the skin.”

This is of utmost importance because, as we all know, the skin around your eyes is ultra-delicate. That means visible signs of aging, like fine lines, wrinkles and crepey skin, can appear even more pronounced as your skin matures.

SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex

The A.G.E. Eye Complex is silky in texture and contains proxylane, blueberry extract, optical diffusers and a complex of flavonoids and synergistic peptides. To put it more simply, proxylane restores water and nutrients to the skin, while blueberry extract addresses skin firmness and the appearance of wrinkles. The special complex reduces the look of dark circles while ensuring optimal firmness in the skin. And lastly, optical diffusers leave your eye area bright and radiant. Per this study, “Optical diffusers are a useful adjunct in the concealment of infraorbital dark circles. These compounds are composed of microionised mineral particles that are designed to reflect light away from the skin.”

So basically, you’re getting amazing skincare ingredients that specifically target visible signs of aging. If you’re noticing crow’s feet, wrinkles, under-eye bags, puffiness and lack of radiance, it’s time to give SkinCeuticals’ eye cream a chance. And to be clear, visible signs of aging are perfectly normal and beautiful in their own right. However, if these skin concerns are something you’d like to act on, reach for an anti-aging eye product like this one.

The following users did, and they saw incredible results.

“This eye cream is incredible! I have been feeling increasingly self-conscious about crepiness around the eyes, as well as sagging upper eyelids. This eye cream has helped correct both issues in only a few weeks of use. Despite the high price, this is my new must-have skincare cream,” one five-star shopper raved.

Another one wrote, “I am using this cream at night only. It is rich, hydrating and therapeutic. I have seen a vast improvement in the dark circles under my eyes.”

“I’ve literally tried everything for the smile lines and wrinkles around my eyes. I’m 43 and woke up one day and my eyes looked tired, squinty and like the skin around my eyes was tissue paper,” explained another reviewer. “Obviously, no cream is going to take off 20 years, but this is the closest thing – and I’ve been using it for about four weeks. Immediate results. Looking forward to see[ing] what happens in the next couple of months.”

Follow these shoppers’ leads and put this best-selling, anti-wrinkle eye cream to the test. Apply it once or twice daily under your eyes and around the brow area. In absolutely no time, your eye should look fresh, smooth, firm and radiant.

It used to be that a product when viral on TikTok every other week and flew off the shelves, making it impossible to get your hands on. But these days, actually great viral products don’t happen very often so when they do, I take a second look. That’s what happened when I saw everyone posting about Yves Saint Laurent’s Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick. I’ve tried the formula before and I’m in love with the shine it leaves behind. So, when I saw my favorite beauty girls waxing poetically about their must-have shades, I knew we had a viral hit on our hands.

What makes YSL’s Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick feel so unique is how it’s a gloss and a lipstick in one. It melts right onto your lips just like a nourishing lip balm thanks to the addition of vitamin E and hyaluronic acid. But unlike a tinted lip balm, there’s a good amount of pigment that actually lasts on your lips for a few hours. There’s a sheer color, but the rest are pretty medium-coverage.

Toni Bravo tried the three new shades on her darker skin tone and they all look amazing. Seriously. But 14 Scenic Brown (sheer brown) is especially good on her.

Love her or hate her, Hailey Bieber continually sets new trends in the beauty and fashion space that can’t be ignored, especially if we’re talking nail game. The celeb sent the Internet into a spiral this week when she ditched her mega-popular ‘glazed donut nails’ for a mismatched, abstract design. It’s not the first time she’s thrown us all for a loop when it comes to her manicures; from neon green nails to white pearls with a cool chrome finish to a candy cane take on her coined donut look, Bieber knows how to keep us on our toes.

Mismatched/Abstract Nails

Bieber put the new mani on display on Instagram while spilling about Rhodes latest launch (more on that here.) Each nail has a wildly different design than the next, from swirls of deep purple to pops of yellow with pink dots to seemingly plaid details. Basically, it’s right on queue for summer.

In a TikTok interview with Refinery29, Bieber revealed exactly what she asks for when it comes to her nails. They’re an updated version of the nude, neutral nails celebrities love so much. These look like white pearls with a cool chrome finish. And they’re pretty easy to copy.

“I do one thin layer of a color,” Bieber told Refinery29. “I like making my own colors too, so I’ll ask her [the nail technician] ‘Can you mix this with this and put clear in it to thin it out.” She added: “Then, I rub chrome dust over it. I’m having a chrome nail obsession.” And it gets even better.

Bieber’s nail artist Zola Ganzorigt shared the exact color combo on Instagram. Once TikTokers learned of Bieber’s secret, to the salon! they went. Ganzorigt calls the mani “glazed donuts nails.”

Here’s the combo. Ganzorigt applies OPI Stay Strong gel base coat ($8.99 at Walmart) with OPI GelColor Gel Nail Polish in Funny Bunny ($22.79 at Walmart) on top. Next comes OPI Gel Color Stay Shiny Top Coat ($18.45 at Walmart) with OPI Chrome Effects Mirror Shine Nail Powder in Tin Man Can ($29.95 at Walmart) sprinkled on top. These are all OPI Professional products you can ask for at the nail salon but we found them at Walmart if you want to DIY the look.

Every TikToker who tried the pearly chrome nails loved them. Kyndall Ames asked for the exact combo at the nail salon and her tech seriously delivered. Rachel Autenrieth wasn’t sure exactly what to ask for but her nail artist killed it, as well. This color combo works well on shorter nails, too. You don’t have to do the long almond shape as Bieber does. Trisha Smith‘s nails look great and they’re a shorter almond style.

Bieber’s nail artist spilled all the deets on Instagram on how exactly she created this look. Zola Ganzorigt began by using the OPI Stay Strong gel base coat, followed by the OPI Stay shiny gel top coat and OPI Chrome effects in Tin Man Can. Lastly, to get that sultry brown shade, she used
DND gel colors in Coffee Bean and Spice Brown.

Ganzorigt prepped the nails with OPI GelColor Stay Strong Base Coat ($21.95 at Walmart) and added one coat of OPI GelColor in Funny Bunny ($11.49 at Amazon
). Then, she did the french tips in OPI GelColor in Big Apple Red ($11.49 at Amazon

The celeb doesn’t always stick with neutrals; her nail artist designed this “Glow in the Dark” look for Bieber’s Coachella weekend.

She began by using the tried and true OPI GelColor Stay Strong Base Coat ($19.49 at Walmart) before mixing the OPi Gel Color in No Faux Yellow and Green Come True with the Stay Strong Gel Base Coat. “Add a little bit of glow in the dark powder to the color and mix it well,” she captioned the post, followed by the additional steps. “Apply one coat of mixed color and cure it. Apply Stay Shiny GelColor Top Coat and cure it. Draw squiggly lines using OPI GelColor in Suzy’s Slinging Mezcal and cure it. Gently rub OPI Chrome Effects in Gold Digger on gold lines. Apply Stay Shiny GelColor Top Coat and cure it.”

It’s a known fact that Hailey Bieber’s skin always looks unreal. But she can’t achieve such dewy skin solely with serums, oils and glazing fluids. Sunscreen certainly plays a huge part in the appearance of her skin, and though we know of the EltaMD formula she loves, there’s a new SPF sheriff in town.

Summer Fridays’ ShadeDrops Mineral Milk Sunscreen is a lightweight, reef-friendly mineral sunscreen that provides SPF 30 sun protection and feels like a weightless serum upon application. It’s suitable for all skin types but specifically can help with concerns like dryness and dullness. It serves as both sun protection and skincare thanks to its impressive ingredient list.

Zinc oxide (a common active ingredient in mineral sunscreens) blocks skin against UVA and UVB rays, while squalane softens, smooths and plumps your complexion. Additionally, a complex containing vitamin E and ethyl ferulate (an ester of ferulic acid) shields your skin from free-radical damage. Even better: There’s soothing chamomile in the formula, too. This sounds like such an ideal concoction of ingredients for a vegan, cruelty-free sunscreen.

In a recent TikTok, Hailey slathered her face in rhode’s new essence and followed that with ShadeDrops. Two steps are all it took to get beautiful, summer-ready (and sun-ready) skin. She also posted a pic on Instagram where she’s laying out alongside her rhode products and the Summer Fridays SPF.

The way the ShadeDrops Mineral Milk Sunscreen leaves your skin soft instead of greasy is also a huge bonus. Plus, the formula features a naturally-derived tint that looks good on all skin tones, according to the brand. Hailey’s other fave SPF, the EltaMD
one, also has a subtle tint, so it’s no wonder why she loves this Summer Fridays tube.

One of the top skincare rules of thumb is applying sunscreen every single day (and re-applying as needed). Summer Fridays’ consulting dermatologist, Dr. Samantha Ellis, says, “I cannot stress enough the importance of daily sun protection in preventing premature aging and reducing the risk of skin cancer, and finding a sunscreen that you enjoy using makes creating a sun-protection habit so much easier.” She loves ShadeDrops for all of the reasons listed above, but also because she says it sits well under makeup and over skincare.

Hailey’s endorsement should be plenty, but once you hear from some shoppers who also love this mineral sunscreen, you’ll be adding it to your cart in seconds.

The product has earned a 4.3-star overall rating at Sephora, with one five-star reviewer saying, “This is exactly what I was looking for. I was having a hard time finding a mineral sunscreen that wasn’t heavy, didn’t leave a white cast and didn’t pill until I found this. It feels like skincare and layers well under other products.”

Another one wrote, “I love it so much! I have dry skin and this gives me such a nice hydrated dewy look. I wear it by itself or under makeup and it’s great.”

And if you’re worried about how it wears on acne-prone skin, this happy shopper says, “As an acne-prone skin girly it is really hard for me to find a sunscreen that doesn’t break me out. This is one of the only sunscreens that doesn’t break me out. I cannot express how much I love this sunscreen.”

For those who’ve been contemplating switching their SPFs this summer, look no further than the ShadeDrops Mineral Milk Sunscreen that’s available at Sephora and Revolve.

Tell me if you’ve seen it too: In our hyper-connected, digital world, fashion no longer seems to be a matter of personal style. Instead, Y2K trends are in one week, followed by 70s vibes (à la Daisy Jones) a few days later. And don’t get me started on the battle between low-rise and skinny jeans. I’ll take whatever’s comfortable, thank you very much. The point is, as we cycle through core trends, our outfits of the day appear to repeat a templatized structure. But, if you want to break free from the masses, you’ve come to the right place. Today, we’re chatting how to make maximalist fashion your own.

Maximalist Fashion: Tips for Curating a Wardrobe That’s Uniquely You

But first, let’s clarify. “Maximalist” fashion can conjure up ideas of going big or going home. And while we love exploring bright colors and fun prints, especially in the summer, the core ethos aligns with the simple guideline of following your sartorial bliss. So how do you make that happen? I chatted with two of my favorite fashion creators, Courtney Pentimalli and Alejandra Hernandez, to learn how we can all sift through the noise and embrace the style that feels best for us.

Courtney Pentimalli

  • Instagram

Courtney runs the online community, The Fair Court. The brand was built around her favorite form of creative expression—getting dressed! She has always felt that putting together an outfit was similar to finalizing a puzzle or creating a collage. It is the epicenter of her journey in experimentation with art, in a physical form. The Fair Court began as a personal platform, but over time has grown into a place where she can share her styling tips and vintage secrets. Courtney loves helping people feel the most comfortable in the things they wear while encouraging sustainability at the same time.

Alejandra Hernandez

Alejandra (goes by Ale) was born and raised in Mexico until 23 when she got married and moved to California. She has always loved exploring her creativity, which inspired her to pursue a degree in architecture. Ale is a content creator and runs the online consignment and thrift store, Vintage Butterfly.

On Defining and Developing a Personal Style

The idea of creating a personal style can feel deeply elusive and impossible to pin down. It’s one of those things that when you see it, you know it. Someone dawns a bold print that wears like an extension of their personality. Or perhaps a coworker rocks an all-black ensemble every day with confidence. And while we love seeing others owning what feels best for them, doing it ourselves can come with a few roadblocks.

Below, Courtney and Ale share their tips on finding and continuously evolving a personal style that’s entirely your own.

Shop with intention.

Like many people, the idleness of the pandemic inspired Courtney to get creative with her closet. “I got really into Etsy—retail therapy was my coping mechanism. People would say how good I was at finding these unique pieces, and I think it came down to being really intentional about what I was looking for.”

Building on this, she adds that shopping with intention honors the intimacy inherent in building a wardrobe that feels like a reflection of yourself. “Knowing your body, what feels good, and what you feel comfortable in is such a deeply personal experience,” Courtney notes.

“I’ve always felt that putting together an outfit is like putting together a puzzle.” — Courtney Pentimalli

So how do you make this happen? It can start with a simple journaling session, reflecting on the styles, prints, colors, and shapes you’re drawn to. From there, jot down what may be getting in the way of wearing these pieces. Is it related to body image? Or perhaps someone made an unkind comment when you wore something out of the norm? Oftentimes, our clothing can touch upon aspects of ourselves that go beyond getting dressed. It can be helpful to discuss these questions with either a therapist or a trusted friend to help you gain clarity.

From there, create a vision board that outlines your intention and visualize the wardrobe you want to build. Gather images on Pinterest or from magazines and create a digital or physical collage that expresses the look and feel you want to exude. You can even add words, phrases, or mantras that capture the energy you want to bring to your looks.

Prioritize comfort.

Ale admits that, though she’s built a dedicated community around owning your unique style on Instagram, she struggles with identifying her aesthetic from time to time. But despite this ebb and flow, she knows that feeling at ease is what’s most important. “I’ve learned that, at the end of the day, I am going to feel most comfortable and happy when I wear what aligns with my true self.”

However, like most things in life, it’s all about striking a balance. She notes that it can be fun to take risks with your style. “You’ll never know if you love something if you don’t try it,” says Ale.

Courtney speaks to the physical element of comfort, encouraging women to embrace the changes our bodies go through over time. “Change is inevitable—own it. Confidence is something that many women struggle with,” says Courtney. But she encourages growing through these changes, letting go of the trends, and embracing what works for you. “Mentally and physically, everything just falls into place once you start wearing what feels best in your body.”

Step outside of what’s marketed to you.

As a style consultant, Courtney sees countless clients holding onto clothes that connect them to a specific experience or that they feel deeply nostalgic about. “Clothes should be a vehicle that help us move throughout the world with confidence,” she says. “Not the other way around.” Again, we may feel that we have to be a certain size or body shape to wear something. But Courtney wants us to let go of that belief immediately.

“So often, we’re not comfortable in the clothes we’re wearing because we’re only selecting what’s been marketed to us. We need to step outside of that box and have fun experimenting with the pieces that resonate.”

Remember: personal style is different for everyone.

Developing your own style is a process—be patient and curious as you discover what resonates with you. While Courtney still loves to look at what’s trending, she’s careful to approach it through a different lens. “I ask myself: Can I buy this vintage? Can I buy this secondhand?

She encourages exploring the trends you find yourself drawn to. However, it’s important to not invest too heavily—financially and emotionally. With our culture of overconsumption and the constant cycling of “-core” trends, it’s easy to burn out. “And,” Courtney adds, “you don’t want to give up that precious closet real estate to a piece that isn’t really you.”

When it comes to style on social media, how do you tune out the noise and find inspiration versus copying a trend entirely?

“We have to be careful to consume only what makes us grow, what inspires us, and what makes us better,” says Ale. It’s such an important reminder that goes beyond style. Remember: social media is a tool. As users, we’re empowered to direct the algorithm in a way that serves us inspiring, uplifting, and ultimately positive content. And as Ale notes, we can learn by what others are doing on social media and add our own twist. “But remember,” she cautions, “not every trend is for you to adopt.”

“We have to be careful to consume only what makes us grow, what inspires us, and what makes us better.” — Alejandra Hernandez

Courtney views social media similarly, seeing it both as “an amazing place to be inspired and exposed to new things” as well as a reflection of our collective push to overconsume. She admits that she’s had to unlearn some of the patterns she’s experienced by diving deeper into the fashion community online. “It took realizing that those things—that next purchase or piece—weren’t giving me the value I thought they would.”

Again, that’s where intention comes in. “Our money is our power, and where we spend it says a lot about what we support,” Courtney observes. So instead of immediately buying whatever is cheapest and on-trend, she encourages looking to small business owners or stylists who you can build a relationship with and feel good about supporting with your purchase.

If someone wants to have more fun with their style, but is afraid to branch out, how could they build the confidence to try something new?

Courtney’s response underscores the truth that finding your personal style is a process—and one that will be filled with plenty of paradoxes. While it’s important to get specific about the wardrobe you want to build, you can also learn by how you respond emotionally to pieces and patterns. “Don’t think too hard about it,” she says. “Remember, it’s a process and it’s important to reflect on how certain pieces, colors, and shapes make you feel. It’s not about other people complimenting or commenting on what you wear—it’s about what makes you feel vibrant.”

She adds that, when it comes to who you follow, find people on the internet you relate to. Whether you have the same body shape or gravitate toward similar pieces, get inspired by how they wear these styles. Conversely, unfollow anyone who makes you feel fearful to be brave with your style or try something new.

Ale agrees, citing experimentation as a core part of her process. “Take a risk! If you like a trend or a style but think you couldn’t rock it, just try it.” Ultimately, what it comes down to is letting your truth lead the way, but never be afraid to brave and bold with your style.

“It’s not about other people complimenting or commenting on what you wear—it’s about what makes you feel vibrant.” — Courtney Pentimalli

As someone with combination skin, my makeup routine has one goal: to toe the line between glazed and greasy. Glowy, glass skin is one thing. Who doesn’t aspire to the vitality of vibrant summer skin? And with summer finally here, beauty trends lean toward a more minimal, skin-focused approach to makeup. Which sounds great in theory—that is, until my makeup melts by midday. In our search for answers, we’ve likely all come across the ultimate comparison: setting spray vs. powder. In the fight for that elusive “lit from within” glow, finding the superior option for your skin is essential.

I think of summer as the great equalizer. Keeping my makeup from slipping and sliding off my face is a year-round sport. But in the summer, we’re all faced with the same challenge—and we all want answers.

Setting Spray vs. Powder: What to Know

There are hoards of products dedicated to making your looks last, from primers and micellar waters to prep your skin to setting sprays and powders. But which options actually work? Turns out, in the battle of setting spray vs. powder, there’s no single right choice. It all comes down to your skin type and desired look.

I spoke to Jena Joyce, a skincare expert, herbalist, and the founder and CEO of The Plant Mother, about how to get your look to stay fresh using setting spray and powder. Jena shares her insights below.

What is the difference between setting powder and setting spray?

You can get a setting spray for either mattifying your makeup or making your makeup more dewy. Depending on what look you are going for, you can choose a spray that works best for you. A powder is only for mattifying and will help to reduce sheen and oil.

I would recommend that a person with dry or combination skin use a spray while those who experience oily skin should use the setting powder. However, both can also be used at the same time to amplify your makeup so it lasts longer.

What should you consider when purchasing a setting powder or setting spray?

When looking to buy a setting spray, you want to know first if you want to have dewy or matte skin. If you primarily use matte, full-coverage foundation, then a matte setting spray would be best. If you use a lightweight and dewy foundation, then choose a setting spray that will help to keep your makeup more on the glossy side. It’s important to try and match your makeup to your powder or spray as you don’t want any separation in your makeup.

When looking for a setting powder, you can get pressed or loose powder form. Both help your makeup stay put, but a powder that is more compressed can act like a foundation and will give you a full-coverage feel.

Although it’s not as common, some setting powders can contain talc which is an ingredient known to cause health issues. Inhalation of talc can cause breathing issues, chest pain, and wheezing. Try to avoid this ingredient and stick to more natural products.

What’s the best way to apply setting sprays and powders?

Setting powders and spray should be applied after your makeup. However, I would advise waiting to put your mascara on after you use a spray as this could cause smudging!

You should stick to common base ingredients when it comes to your makeup. If you don’t, your makeup will separate.

I like people to envision mixing oil with water. It simply doesn’t blend! This is the same with your makeup which is why it’s important to use a spray or powder that has the same base as your foundation and concealers. Keep oils with oils and water-based with water-based products.

How to Pick the Product That’s Right for You

You can use a setting spray, powder, or both to get your desired look. But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the right one? No beauty product is created equal, so I asked Dr. HariKiran Chekuri—a board-certified dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon, and the medical head of ClinicSpots—about choosing the right products for your skin. Keep reading for insights.

Tips for Selecting a Setting Powder

  • Shade. Select a translucent setting powder that is universal for all skin tones, or a tinted setting powder that matches your foundation or adds some warmth or depth to your complexion.
  • Finish. You can choose a matte setting powder that eliminates shine and gives you a velvety look, or a luminous setting powder that adds some subtle shimmer and gives you a soft-focus look.
  • Texture. Choose a loose setting powder that is finely milled and easy to blend, or a pressed setting powder that is compact and convenient to carry.

Tips for Selecting a Setting Spray

  • Formula. Opt for a water-based setting spray that is lightweight and hydrating, or an alcohol-based setting spray that is long-lasting and mattifying.
  • Finish. You can choose a dewy setting spray that enhances your glow and makes your skin look plump and healthy, or a matte setting spray that reduces shine and makes your skin look smooth and flawless.
  • Ingredients. You can choose a setting spray that contains beneficial ingredients for your skin type, such as antioxidants, vitamins, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, etc. You should also avoid setting sprays that contain harmful ingredients such as parabens, sulfates, phthalates, etc.

Key Ingredients to Look For

  • Antioxidants. These are substances that protect your skin from free radical damage caused by environmental factors such as UV rays, pollution, etc. Some examples of antioxidants are vitamin C, vitamin E, and green tea extract.
  • Hyaluronic acid. This is a molecule that attracts and retains moisture in your skin cells. It helps hydrate your skin, plump up fine lines and wrinkles, and improve your skin elasticity.
  • Glycerin. This is a humectant that draws water from the air into your skin. It helps moisturize your skin, smooth out rough patches, and prevent dryness.

Ingredients to Avoid

  • Parabens. Parabens are preservatives that prevent bacterial growth in cosmetic products. They are linked to hormonal disruption, allergic reactions, and breast cancer risk.
  • Sulfates. These are detergents that create foam in cleansing products. They’re known to strip away natural oils from your skin, irritate your skin barrier, and cause dryness.
  • Phthalates. These are plasticizers that make products more flexible and durable. They are associated with reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption, and developmental defects.

Tips for Finishing Off Your Look

A general rule of thumb is to use products with similar formulas to ensure compatibility and avoid separation or oxidation of your makeup.

For example, if you use an oil-based foundation, consider using an oil-based setting powder or an alcohol-based setting spray to set it in place and prevent it from sliding off due to oil production. If you use a water-based foundation, you might want to use a water-based setting powder or a water-based setting spray to lock it in place and prevent it from drying out.

You can also experiment with different combinations of products to see what works best for you and what gives you the desired effect. For example, you can use an oil-based foundation with a water-based setting spray to add some dewiness and hydration to your matte base. Or, try a water-based foundation with an oil-based setting powder to add some warmth and glow to your natural base.

The key is to test out different products on yourself and see how they perform on your skin type and with your makeup style.

Given that I spend most of my time in front of my phone or computer, this mist helps prevent any negative effects that come with blue light, such as potential premature aging and stress on your skin.

But beyond its blue light-blocking benefits, it’s also a powerful setting spray. Filled with clean, skin-first ingredients, it hydrates and sets for a finish that looks vibrant and dewy. Perfect for summer.

The Best Powders

Powders can get a bad reputation. Though they effectively cut shine, they can also quickly cake and crease. And even when they work, new beauty trends favor less coverage and skin that looks like skin. Can powders achieve that? Don’t count it out. But a good powder is the best way to control oil—whether you’re going for a completely matte look or just a more controlled glow.

Most Versatile Setting Powder: Glossier Wowder

Glossier is known for making skin-first products that give you an effortless glow. So it makes sense that their cult-favorite powder doesn’t compromise your pursuit of dewy, natural-looking skin. I tried the Glossier Wowder when I was deep in my Glossier phase and it’s one of the products I’ve kept in my rotation ever since. The kaolin clay base absorbs oil without leaving a cakey residue. It works well with my other hydrating products to create a look that is controlled but not flat. Get this breathable powder if you want your skin to look like skin while still toning down the midday grease.

  • Key Ingredients: Diamond Powder, Kaolin Clay, Vitamin E
  • Size: 7.2 g

Glossier Wowder

Kaolin Clay is the secret ingredient that absorbs oil without caking or sitting on top of your skin. Combined with diamond powder, which has reflective particles for a subtle glow, Glossier’s Wowder keeps your look from falling flat or falling apart.

What I’ve Learned About Marriage After 14 Years https://www.mylivingtip.com/2023/06/05/what-ive-learned-about-marriage-after-14-years/ https://www.mylivingtip.com/2023/06/05/what-ive-learned-about-marriage-after-14-years/#respond Mon, 05 Jun 2023 10:00:00 +0000 https://www.mylivingtip.com/2023/06/05/what-ive-learned-about-marriage-after-14-years/

I married Adam when I was 25 years old. He was my first serious boyfriend, and considering our decade-plus age difference and the fact that we worked together, it may not have seemed like the wisest decision I’d ever made. But I’d never been so sure of anything in my life—even if someone had tried, there would have been a zero percent chance of talking me out of it.

This week we’re celebrating our fourteenth wedding anniversary. It sounds absolutely crazy to say it. We’ve been parents together for a decade, and I can’t believe that we’ll soon have a middle schooler in the house. I remember hearing that after being married for a few years, things would inevitably fizzle—passion would take a backseat when we had kids, one of us would get the seven-year itch. I kept waiting for it to happen, but somehow our relationship just kept getting better. I don’t claim to know our “secret,” but I do think it helps that we both believe we struck gold when we found each other.

So in honor of our anniversary, I thought I’d share a few things I’ve learned about long-term love after fourteen years with my soulmate. Everyone’s relationship is different, but these are lessons that have helped us navigate the challenging moments. They’ve inspired a relationship that’s built on trust, mutual respect, passion, unfading attraction, and a shared excitement that ensures our life together is never boring. Take what you want, leave the rest.

Let it go

I’ve seen relationships fall apart over small annoyances that build up over time, slowly growing into something bigger. I decided early on that I wouldn’t let it happen to us—I chose to accept the things that probably aren’t going to change, and be very selective about what I made into an issue. When I start to feel irritated, I try to ask myself “Could I laugh about this?” (BTW, this is a great strategy to employ with your kid, your co-worker, your mom, your sister… )

Turn toward “bids for connection”

Let’s talk about bids for connection, a concept I learned from Dr. John Gottman’s research on healthy marriages. Essentially, a “bid” is an attempt from one partner for attention, affirmation, or connection. It could be a wink, a touch, a request for help, sharing something vulnerable, or a suggestion to do something together. When you recognize that your partner has made a bid for connection, you have a choice: you can consciously turn toward that bid by acknowledging it, or you can turn away from that bid by ignoring or rejecting it.

Research shows that this “turning toward” or “turning away” is extremely important for the health of a relationship. Missing a few bids for connection is normal, but when it becomes the norm, it can lead to a relationship’s demise. It’s about paying attention and prioritizing. (Highly recommend reading more about this in the Gottman’s book.)

See your partner with fresh eyes

A few years ago, I went to a dinner where I was seated next to sex therapist Esther Perel. One of my biggest takeaways from our conversation was that we’re most drawn to our partners when there’s a distinct separation between us. Even in long-term relationships, we’re not one and the same—we never really “belong” to one another.

One example of this is when we consciously choose to see our partner through the eyes of another. For instance, if Adam and I are at a crowded event, I might watch him from across the room deep in conversation, and I try to view him as though he’s a stranger. Creepy? Maybe (lol), but just TRUST ME, it’s sexy. There’s something about seeing your person with fresh eyes that brings a wave of those feelings from when you first met. It always reminds me why I fell in love with him in the first place.

Let them know you want them

Now that you’ve remembered how hot your partner is, let them know it. Tell them, touch them, flirt with them. Let them know there’s no one else you’d rather spend time with. Feeling desired somehow makes you more desirable, and it sets a whole new energy in motion.

Cool off, then say I’m sorry

Arguing is inevitable, but the way we fight is the real kicker. Adam and I can both be stubborn, but over the years we’ve gotten a lot better at being the first to say I’m sorry. We’ve learned that it’s helpful for us to take a break and cool off so that we can honestly ask ourselves what role each of us played in the disagreement. Owning it and apologizing goes a long way. Usually, we both realize that whatever we were fighting about wasn’t that important anyway. When we release the need to be right, we can move forward together.

Always learning, always growing

Always have something to grow toward together

Shared goals and dreams for the future have always been our favorite thing to talk about. Whether we’re starting a workout routine, landscaping the backyard, launching a business, or saving for a bucket list vacation, a shared challenge brings so much vitality to our relationship. Some of our best conversations happen when we pour a glass of wine and share our dreams for the future. Even if we don’t actually do all of them, it reminds us that we’re on each others’ team, building something together.
